Program

Day1

Alberobello

More than a thousand cones upside down toward the sky welcome you in Alberobello.
The history of these strange homes mingle easily with local myths and legends. The latest studies carried out by a local scholar associate Alberobello to the Turkish town of Harran, in Kurdistan: “The majority of scholars believe that the architecture of the Trulli in its primitive forms has come to us from the Near East. Among the earliest evidence we note those of Harran in Kurdistan, place mentioned in Genesis because from there Abraham left to Ur. There are thousands of 1-room ocher Trulli because built with blocks of soil baked in the sun.” In our blog curiosities about trulli.
Upon arrival, guided visit and tasting of typical products in a trullo shop.

Day2

Noci

35km

After breakfast your bike trip in the Land of Trulli will begin: this first excursion will introduce you to the area.
Hills, tidy and colourful vineyards, olive groves, forests of oak. Your goal today will be Noci, a town with a well preserved historic centre. If you do not fancy to sit in one of the restaurants that you can find near Noci, we recommend a gastronomic excursion at the coolest grocery of Puglia, “Marino”, where you can taste his Divine Sandwich.
Back to Alberobello following the way among the hills of Barsento; but be careful not to descend too fast, because you would miss the crossing for the place where in a bucolic setting you will find the rural church of Santa Maria di Barsento built in the 6th century.

Day3

Martina Franca

30km

Today the bike route is almost completely flat; the only ascent will be the one that will take you on Mount San Martino that houses the old town of Martina Franca. This art city decorated in Baroque style is in between the white buildings of Ostuni and the 17th century architecture of Lecce. Walking through its narrow streets you will be in front of an unmistakably unique artistic expression.
The town takes its name from its patron saint, San Martino. The name “Franca” is given by Philip of Anjou in the 14th century, to exempt the town from the payment of taxes in perpetuity. That’s how the centre, attracting many people from the surrounding hills, develops quickly turning it into a well-fortified city.
After strolling through the alleys of its historical centre, we advise you to sample a couple of really famous local products: the Capocollo of Martina Franca, Puglia appreciated cold cut, Slow Food Presidium since 2007, and the Bocconotto, sweet shortbread with a cream and black cherry heart, to taste strictly at Café Nuova Tripoli.
Enjoy a tour among the food & wine experiences in Puglia.

Day4

Locorotondo

25km

Few kilometres to ride with your bike to reach Lorocotondo, small white village whose wonderful balcony overlooks the heart of the Itria Valley.
The lands here are devoted to the cultivation of vines, which with the help of the sun produce a light and fresh white wine of high-quality: the Locorotondo Doc. Resume your bike ride after a highly recommended “culinary research” in one of the small restaurants hidden in the pretty old town.
And if on your return to Alberobello you are still “thirsty”, you can enjoy a wine tasting at one of the wineries in or near Alberobello.

Day5

Castellana Grotte

30km

For you last day of this bike trip in the Land of Trulli you will reach to the largest karst caves in Italy!
The Castellana caves run underground for over three kilometers in an atmosphere between evocative power and magic, reflections with stalagmites and stalactites grown with ancestral rhythms. All this is the result of the erosive action of surface water, which for millennia have slowly dug this hole to open the gate to the sea.
If you want to combine the sea with a bike tour from Alberobello, there is Discover Puglia by bike tour.

Day6

Alberobello

After breakfast end of services.
To learn more about the many stories and legends on the fascinating conical constructions of Alberobello, you can visit the Museum of the Territory “Casa Pezzolla” in Aia Piccola, one of the two halves of the old town.

Tour programme variations
Due to organizational reasons, weather conditions or provisions issued by local authorities, the itinerary may be subject to some changes before and/or during the holiday.
Along the way you may find temporary deviations (for example road works) which cannot be foreseen; in this case each biker can decide autonomously how to deal with these stretches.
