Highlights
The last 100 km of the Via Francigena from Montefiascone to Rome are a fascinating journey into the land of the ancient Etruscans. Starting from Montefiascone, the Belvedere della Tuscia, you will reach Rome through suggestive medieval streets, nature paths from which the remains of ancient towers emerge, and incredible forests. You will pass through Etruscan settlements and places where the ancient Romans lived, to get to know the most unexpected Lazio. You will arrive in Rome in the year of the Jubilee and the emotion will be great when crossing the columns of St. Peter's Square.

Day1
Welcome Montefiascone
Welcome to Montefiascone, a privileged observatory of Lake Bolsena and its surroundings, which offers spectacular views of Tuscia.
It is from this fascinating village developed on the edge of a vast volcanic crater that the last 100km of the Via Francigena towards Rome begin. Montefiascone is a lovely medieval village that will amaze you with its beauty and its characteristic eagle's nest position on the lake.
Day2
From Montefiascone to Viterbo

After a tasty breakfast, you will begin to travel the last stretch of the Via Francigena del Nord. You will walk on the original section of the ancient Via Cassia and, immersed in dense vegetation that frames the splendid hills of Tuscia, you will walk on the same pavement crossed by kings, emperors, pilgrims, ancient soldiers and peasants.
Among pastures and cultivated fields you will reach the incredible Bagnaccio Thermal Baths, which has always been frequented by pilgrims for the healing properties of its hot water pools. You will arrive in Viterbo, welcomed by the marvelous Piazza San Lorenzo overlooked by the cathedral and the beautiful Palazzo dei Papi.
Day3
From Viterbo to Vetralla

The splendid stage of the journey along the Via Francigena from Montefiascone to Rome will take you to discover an area rich in oak groves and olive trees. From Viterbo you will quickly leave the asphalt road to immerse yourself in the beautiful forest where you will travel along the Etruscan Via Cava. Among fun ups and downs you will come across the ruins of Santa Maria in Forcassi, an ancient post station on the Via Cassia, already present when Sigerico undertook this fascinating journey. Shortly after you will reach Vetralla, a village of very ancient origins important for defensive needs thanks to its position overlooking the Sant'Antonio valley. Little curiosity, the woods around Vetralla are famous for their collection of porcini mushrooms!
Day4
From Vetralla to Sutri via Capranica

A hearty breakfast and we set off to discover an exciting stage full of fantastic villages to get to know and explore. After leaving the town of Vetralla you will continue on the splendid MTB-trekking route of Monte Fogliano inside a cool oak forest. The fascinating Orlando Towers that emerge among the beautiful hazelnut trees along the ancient Via Cassia are the prelude to the arrival in ancient Capranica with its picturesque and orderly historic center.
The arrival in Sutri, the pearl of Tuscia, is a fascinating journey that passes through centuries of history which ends in the picturesque Piazza del Comune. We recommend you visit the beautiful church of Santa Maria del Prato, completely dug into the tuff, a hidden pearl of this fascinating trek on the Via Francigena from Montefiascone to Rome.
Day5
From Sutri to Campagnano di Roma

The protagonists of this splendid stage, along the Via Francigena from Montefiascone to Rome, are the beautiful Monte Gelato waterfalls, immersed in one of the most evocative points of the Treja Valley. After a recommended visit to the ancient mill which hosts a permanent exhibition on the nature of the area, you will reach the charming village of Campagnano. This important Etruscan settlement stands at the top of an area covered by forests, rich in evidence dating back to the Bronze Age.

From Campagnano to La Giustiniana

Penultimate day to complete the last 100 km on the Via Francigena from Montefiascone to Rome which will lead you to the borders of the Eternal City. Rome is getting closer and closer!
Leaving the town center, you will cross one of the best-known naturalistic areas around the capital which will allow you to discover two fascinating villages: Formello and Velo. We suggest you visit the various Etruscan artifacts that have been found in these areas. Like the Formello Alphabetarium, a vase characterized by an inscription used as a guide to decipher other similar inscriptions. Also admire the remains of the ancient Sanctuary of Portonaccio in Veio, from which the beautiful Apollo of Veio, kept in Rome, comes from.
Day7
To Rome on foot or by public transport

The stage that concludes the last 100km of the Via Francigena towards Rome will be a mix of emotions. In this stretch you can feel all the history and charm of retracing the steps of the ancient pilgrims. Once you reach Monte Mario, known as the "mountain of joy", Rome will now be one step away. From here a slow and enchanting descent that will lead you to St. Peter's Square, immersed in the timeless charm of the Capital. If you prefer, you can reach Rome via local public transport.
Day8

After breakfast, end of services.
The journey on the Via Francigena from Montefiascone to Rome will be made even more exciting by the celebrations of the Jubilee of 2025: the Holy Year of the Catholic Church.
Established in 1300 by Pope Boniface VIII, the Universal Jubilee brings together millions of faithful from all over the world in Rome. The official beginning occurs with the reopening by the Pope of the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica, which is walled up until the following Holy Year.

The itinerary along the Via Francigena is suitable for anyone who has excellent training in walking long distances. The length of the stages ranges from a minimum of 17 to a maximum of 28 km, with differences in altitude and routes of medium difficulty and travel times between 3 and 6 hours.
The excursions mostly wind along dirt paths, even in wooded areas and country roads, with some rare but essential passages on busy roads.
We recommend that you bring comfortable shoes suitable for trekking, trekking poles (strongly recommended), hat, water, sunscreen and raincoat in case of rain.

How to get there
Montefiascone is easily reachable by train, car and plane.
BY TRAIN. The reference railway stations are Roma Tiburtina. Once you reach the station, you need to continue with a regional train. To find out about cancellations or additions of stops, cancellations, delays, route diversions and much other useful information for those traveling by train with Trenitalia, consult viatreno. NB: on public holidays there are no trains but only a few buses.
BY PLANE. The closest airports to Montefiascone are Fiumicino and Ciampino.
Once you arrive at the airport, you can take the Trenitalia regional train. Visit the Aeroporti di Roma

BY CAR. For those traveling on the A1/E45 heading north, take the exit for Orte, continue on Via Tiberina and then the junction for Viterbo, exit Montefiascone. For those coming from the South, take the A1/E45, take the Orvieto exit and continue on Via Cassia. Google.maps.com can help.
